In June 1996, at a studio in Tokyo,LUNA SEA were having their live rehearsals for the songs from their new album 'STYLE' Among the crystalized great new songs, there was one song which was extremely played at heavy bottom. That was'1999'. While a lot of LUNA SEA's songs at this era was played at regular tuning(a standard way in tuning the guitar from 6th string in E, A, D, G, B, E), one whole note down tuning (from 6th string in D, G, C, F, A, D)was used, consequently ending up as a song with conforting tight and heavy sound.SUGIZO thought that he should have an ECLIPSE with hambucking pickups just like his former PR-2.

Its neck joint is made with through-neck structure,
and three-piece maple wood is used on the center of the body.

SUGIZO choosed Hambucking pickup!

The back side of the first made S-II's body. A space for inserting two 9V batteries has being curved. At the first place, there was possibility to use a booster with another circuit in this place. Actually, only one battely is used.

Just only half a year ago, SUGIZO performed most numbers with the long scale S-II in successfully ended "LUNATIC TOKYO", LUNA SEA's first show in Tokyo Dome.
Actually, there was only one kind of ECLIPSE with three single pickups at that time. After that, when ECLIPSE was transferred to medium scale, SUGIZO named the old ECLIPSE as "I.Q"8h At same time, "S-II" and "S-III" were completed. "S-II" is the ECLIPSE with hambucking pickups using the EMG-SA for front pickup and EMG-81 for rear pickup. This choice of the pickups is same as from PR-2, and might be the most comfortable settings for SUGIZO on stage. As soon as this model was made, it was used in the rehersals for "1999," and it wa s used in the recording.
Just as he wanted, its high edgy EMG-81fs distortion sound melt into the music. Append to this, INORAN and J also tried several experimental approaches in guitar and bass recordings to this number, "1999," and total work as a band showed extremely high quality which because of their policy never giving up in maintaining high quality music. For "UNENDING STYLE" TOUR in the same year, The S-II was used for "1999" and "IN FUTURE."

Pickups of the first S-II. As you can see, it has EMG-SA for the front pickup and EMG-81 for the rear pickup. EMG pickup has an internal pre-amplifier, giving low impedance and extremely less noise, and because of its low magnetic force, the sound sustains longer. The EMG-SA used on the front was also used for the first made S-I, and EMG-81 for the rear is a high gain type pickup made for gaining basically distortion sound.
Both EMG-SA and EMG-81 need 9V battery when using them for the guitar.
There are two holes on battery panel. It was the guitar technitian's idea to curve those holes to check the level of the battery by plunging the terminal, without opening the panel itself.
